Selecting the correct enclosure for an application requires careful consideration of the installation environment. Factors such as moisture, temperature variation, airborne contaminants, and exposure to chemicals can significantly impact product performance and longevity.
Material choice plays a critical role. Mild steel enclosures provide a solution for general applications where environmental exposure is limited. However, in more demanding conditions - such as outdoor installations, washdown areas, or environments with high humidity, chemical presence or are located on the coast - stainless steel or GRP enclosures offer superior corrosion resistance and durability.
Corrosion resistance becomes particularly important in environments subject to salt-laden air, industrial pollutants, or frequent cleaning regimes. Chemical resistance must also be considered in industries such as food processing, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing, where aggressive substances may be present.
For coastal installations, proximity to the sea should be carefully evaluated. Sites within approximately 20 miles of the coastline may be exposed to airborne salt, which can accelerate corrosion and should therefore be treated as a higher-risk environment when selecting enclosure materials.
Failure to match the enclosure material to the application environment can lead to premature degradation, increased maintenance costs, and potential system failure. It is therefore essential to evaluate environmental conditions at the point of installation and select materials accordingly.
